Built in 1586 by Grandmaster de Verdale, the palace, surrounded by a formidable stone ditch, was used as a hunting retreat by Knights of Malta. Changing roles over the years, it also served as a military prison under the French, and as the Summer residence of British governors in the 19th century.
Truly splendid outside and in, the palace is spread over two floors, with magnificent five storey towers adorning each corner. Though aesthetically delightful in furnishing and decor, the impressive torture dungeon below is anything but. And it is this combination of grandeur and horror that makes the palace so intriguing!
As fascinating as it is beautiful, this awesome palace is well worth checking out!
