Situated in Old Bakery Street, Valletta, the magnificent City Theatre is a hub of vibrant creativity and plays a dynamic role in the Capital’s colourful performance art scene. It has been entertaining audiences with comedies, dramas, dances, and other exciting productions since its inception in the 1980s.
The theatre is located on the site of the former General Workers’ Union building. It was the birthplace of Politeatru, a performance group founded as a cultural medium within the Malta Labour Party. During the late 20th century, the group provided training and performances of a political nature, often followed by heavy debates and discussions.
It now hosts productions by a number of local theatre groups. The building’s red-themed, rather simple interior is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and can seat up to 620 people at a time.
A must for any theatre buff, this unique performance art venue is one of Valletta’s hidden treasures!
